Japans Reform of Social Customs in MeiJi Era

明治维新伊始,日本朝野即掀起了大力学习西方先进文化以改造本国封建传统习俗的社会改革活动,即“文明开化”运动。改革虽然遭到了顽固派的抵制和一部分人推行“全盘西化”的错误思潮的干扰,经受了一些挫折,走了一些弯路,但最终却取得了巨大的成功,形成了日本社会风俗“和洋结合”的独特文化景观和 风格,引起了世界各国的广泛关注。

In the beginning of MeiJi reform, the whole Japan popularized a movement of studying western culture to reform its traditional feudal social customs known as civilizing movement. This movement finally got succeeded in spite of all the prevention and interference of both the diehard and the wrong idea of completely westernized. Thus the unique cultural view and style of Japans social custom combined with western culture came into being and aroused the common interest of other countries in the world.
