The music provided the Greek rationalism in the early days with a good deal of food for thought. Many pre-Socratic thinkers drew inspiration from the stringed instruments of music. The string of the lyre embodied number and length in a unified form:it makes“proportion”not simply something to be heard, but something to be seen and touched;harmonics is the source of the science of numbers.
