Thomas Hardy' s novels mainly describe the countryside life in patriarchal clan system and reflect the change of society after the invasion of capitalism in Britain. The theme of his novel underwent the change from eclogue to tragedy, which resulted from the change of his philosophy as well as the influence of life in his time.
