Challenges brought about by current market changing trend to manufacturing enterprises, and importance of re-configurable manufacturing equipment are discussed. The method of designing a re-configurable machine tool and its two enabling technologies (modular design and open system controller) are introduced and a design example is provided as a solution to the problems our manufacturing enterprises are facing.
