In this essay,we seek to indicate that both conventional models of understanding the relation between religion and morality, designated as (A) and (B) are too extreme in their contents and unsustenable in practice.Model (A) requires morality to be directly and exclusively dependent on religion, whereas model (B) advocates a rational morality that is entirely independent of religion. We suggest that the Enlightenment quest for a rational and universally applicable morality is essentially bankrupt since no community can be completely free of its own historical, cultural and religious antecedents. We propose that a dialectical model (C) which emphasizes the interdependent and mutual interpretative relations between religion and morality will be better able to preserve the cultural integrity of a community. This model should have important implications for cross-cultural ethics as well as public policy discussion.
