Verification of the Facts that Golf Originated From Chuiwan

高尔夫现在是全世界流行的一项活动,但是它的历史起源至今还没有落实下来。当我们把高尔夫与中国古代的捶丸作对比时,发现这两个游戏有基本相同的内容,表明它们是同类型的游戏。但是中国的捶丸此高尔夫早出五百年。我国保留有五代、宋、元、明各代五幅珍贵的捶丸图和有关书籍就是最好的证据。以上各个时期,东西方文化、经济交流频繁,《丸经》在元代已公行于世,这些都能为捶丸的传播铺平道路。中国体育史学界一般都相信高尔夫曾受到捶丸传播的影响。这种看法由于在比较两者的主要棒式和高尔夫有过改造杓棒棒面的过程就更加得到了证实。

Golf is now a popular game played all over the world. But it's natal source has been an unsolved problem. When we compared golf with the ancient Chinese Chuiwan, we found a great part of their contents is almost identical. They show that golf and Chuiwan are games of the same type. Yet Chuiwan is older than golf by about five centuries, we have discovered the best proof in five ancient paintings and other documents about Chuiwan dating from the Five Dynasties(943～960A.D.).During this period there were frequent cultural and economic exchanges beween East and West, and the Yuan Dynasty saw the publication of Wan Jing. All these paved the way for the wide spread of Chuniwan. That's why most scholars of Chinese physical culture here in China believe that golf origin ated form the ancient Chinese Chuiwan. Comparison between the main Clubs used in the two games shows convincing similarities between them, with the impressive improved spoon-shaped surface of the golf club.
