Tissue engineering has show great promise for creating biological alternatives for implants, in which a scaffold plays a key role in seeding the cells and serves as a template for tissue regeneration. Chitosan, made of glucosamine and N-acetylgucosamine units linked by one to four glycosidic bonds, has been proven to be biologically renewable, biodegradable, biocompatible, nonantigenic, nontoxic, and biofunctional. Chitosan and some of its complexes have been studied for use in tissue engineering as a scaffolding material. These scaffoldings should meet the demand of physical, chemical and biological characterizations in demic and biologic environment. Chitosan scaffolds will get further uses in more and more fields of tissue engineering.
