The principle of learner autonomy is the core of cognitive and constructivist learning and teaching theories. The article presents how instructors have applied this principle to taking up a web based teaching and to creating an autonomous learning environment for learners in the graduate course 'Hypermedia for Language Learning' offered in the Department of Modern Foreign Languages, University of Stellenbosch (South Africa).
