侯仁之是中国现代历史地理学的重要开创者之一 ,他率先打破了传统沿革地理学的束缚 ,他在城市历史地理学的研究中独树一帜 ,他开辟了“沙漠历史地理”研究的新方向 ,在理论和实践两个方面为中国历史地理学的发展做出了突出贡献。侯仁之一贯重视野外实地考察 ,强调历史地理学与考古学、历史学、生态学、地貌学、孢粉学、遥感科学的综合交叉 ,他的研究工作跨越了自然科学与社会科学两大领域 ,而“环境变迁”思想始终贯穿于他的历史地理学理论与实践活动中 ,从而构成了中国历史地理学研究领域中一个极富特色。

Hou Ren-zhi, one of the most influential figures in the field of Chinese modern historical geography, made a great contribution for developing this young disciplinary in China. He is the first man who theoretically broke down the tradition of the Chinese dynastic geography (Yan Ge Di Li), and enlightened the new direction of the Chinese modern historical geography. His unique practices mainly focused on urban historical geography, and the field of the environmental changes in the desert area in Northwest China. In the practice, he always emphasizes the importance of field survey, and advocating the cooperation with archaeology, history, ecology, geomorphology, pollen analysis, and the remote sensing technology etc. His achievements spanned the fields of natural sciences and social sciences, in which embodied his environmental thought.
