This paper is an account of the experience of one Hmong American family, which, over the last 25 years, has gone from being citizens of Laos to refugees in Thailand and Argentina, and then immigrants in the United States. The family underwent separation and reunification. In 1980, Ma and his young bride went to Araentina, but his perents and siblings went to America. Their reunification did not occur until 11 years later, when Ma and his family finally came to America as immigrants from Argentina in 1991. In America, Ma and his family, like other Hmong family, has to start from the bottom up. They went from having many acculturation barriers to being self-sufficient. In 2001,the family appears to do well educationlly and financially. The 4 older daughters are now in college and are fluent in 3 languages: Hmong?Spanish and English. The father has a stable job and earns enough income to support the family. Their journey to be Americans will continue.
