The historical fiction in China enjoys exceptional advantages. Actually, however, it is since the end of the 1970s that it has begun to flourish, making a strong impact on the contemporary Chinese literature. It includes three categories: the traditional historical fiction, the neo-historical fiction, and the revolutionary his- torical fiction. So far as its linear development is concemed, the historical fiction haS pe bough be stages: (1)the springing-up stage (beginning at the end of the 1970s with the publication of the first two vol- umes of 'Li Zicheng ', an anti-feudal novel, as its milestone); (2) the transitional stage (beginning in 1983 to the late 1980s with the appearance of non-political fiction, but not as lively as the first stage); and (3)the multi-compound stage (beginning from the 1990s and characterized by diversity and personalization).
