The very reason that J.D.Salinger became a mental leader in the mind of a generation of American young people is his long novel The Catcher in the Rye. Holden Caulfield, the only hero in the novel, is an image of extraordinary revolt. Apart from the rebellious means he exploits of his frenzy, self-abandonment and ultimate cynicism, demonstrates his spiritual superiority beyond his age by way of “hypocrisy” to oppose “hypocrisy” and exhibiting his yearning for nature. That serves him to rank in the rebels in history who desires to “return to nature”, which is of eternal significance.
