Firstly, the paper analyzes the reasons why the eight bondmaids such as Xiren were renamed in Dream of the Red Chamber. Secondly, the renaming has more meanings: It reflects the tragic fortune of the renamed bondmaids. It also shows the novelist' s sympathy for women' s fortune and his attention to women's problems,as a result of the development of the society, the urge by the trend of the time and the mission of the novelist.
