历史学的发展体现在民族性与时代性上,二者辩证的结合才能推进史学进步。近代史学从不同方面表明了这一事实。在全球化趋势下,当代历史学的民族性与时代性问题应该受到特别的重视。要研究全球化对中国史学、对史学思想产生的影响,还要研究中国民族传统史学遗产在发展当代史学上的重要价值。讨论历史兴衰是历史学的主题;研究历史“势”同样是当代历史学的重大理论问题;“究天人之际”是历史学的重要内容;多重考据应当是当代史学考证的基本方法。

The development of the studies of history embodies the features of its times and national characteristics , and the dialectic combination of the two aspects will push the historical studies forward. This is a truth reflected at different levels by modern studies of history. Special importance should be attached to the features of times and national characteristics of historical studies in face of the present tendency of globalization. The studies of history should have not only the research on the impact that globalization exerts upon the studies of Chinese history and the academic thinking as its orientation but have the research on the values of the traditional Chinese historical studies' heritage in the development of modern studies of history as its orientation as well. The theme of historical studies is to put the issue of 'rise and fall' under discussion. The great theory that has been posed by modern studies of history is that historians should elaborate on the 'tendency' of the science of history. The important contents the modern studies of history deals with are the examination of 'man-and-universe relationship'. And the textual studies conducted in a multi-dimentional way to the chief approach of modern historical studies.
