This paper reviews the research in discourse comprehension from cognitive psychology and psycholinguistics perspectives. The authors first discuss the cognitive process of discourse comprehension from propositional, inferential, local and global coherence levels of representations. Then, the psychological mechanism of discourse comprehension is addressed in terms of cognitive components, theoretical modeling of the cognitive architectures and resource constraints on discourse comprehension. Finally, the article concludes by pointing out that further development of discourse comprehension research lies in improving research methodology as well as widening research areas.
