On the Theme of Women's Awakening in Chen Hengzhe's Literary Creation

作为“五四”新文学的第一个女作家 ,陈衡哲在其小说、诗歌、散文中 ,抒发了五四时期新女性对自由人生的渴望和追求 ,对女性生命意义、生存价值的思考和探索。虽有时失于肤浅、稚嫩 ,但毕竟体现了新女性主体意识的觉醒 ,留下了“五四”新女性成长的最初印痕。本文深切关照陈衡哲的文学创作 ,细致体悟她的人性咏叹、博爱情怀、矛盾困惑 。

Chen Hengzhe, the first woman writer of the New Literature during the May Fourth Movement in China's modern history, expresses in her novels, poems, and essays the 'new' women's desire for and pursuit of an unfettered life, their reflections on the meanings of life as well as their perceptions of the values of female existence. These perceptions or reflections, though sometimes superficial and immature, represent the spiritual awakening of the majority of the new type of women as evidence of their progress during the May Fourth Movement. This essay tries to look into Chen's literary creation with a focus on her expression of the human nature, fraternity and emotional perplexities so as to develop a complete picture of her original contribution to the theme of women's awakening.
