翻译是科学和艺术的统一,这是翻译的本质所决定的。翻译的本质存在于翻译的常规性、可授性、创造性、灵活性、艰难性,以及翻译才能的天赋性。之所以人们对翻译是科学还是艺术争论不休,是因为人们在考察和研究翻译的时候,割裂了科学和艺术的统一,只注意到了翻译的一方面,而忽视了翻译的另一方面。在翻译实践过程中,只运用科学或只运用艺术都无法完成翻译的全过程,起码不会是一个完美的过程。

Translation is the union of science and art, which is determined by the nature of translation. The nature lies in the regularity,teachability flexibility,difficulty, creativeness, and the innatenesa of the ability to translate. The incessant argument whether translationbe1ongs to science or art is due to the fact that the union of science and art has been taken separately and due to the fact that only oneside has been taken notice of , but the other has been ignored. In the practice of translation, if science alone or art alone is applied, thewhole process of translation cannot be fulfilled, at least it cannot be fulfilled perfectly.
