The association of insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism in the 16th intron in angiotensin\|converting\|enzyme (ACE) with sportsmen physical ability was reported. The genotype of the 16th intron in ACE of normal control, candidates in aviation school, student\|pilots and jet pilots were analyzed and the DD genotype decreased to 12\^5%,11\^5%,10% and 3%, respectively. There were significant differences in DD genotype and allele frequency between the jet pilot group and the other three groups, and no difference among the other three groups. In the pilots subjected to physical performance evaluation,no one who got excellent score had DD genotype. Physical performance of pilot is associated with the I/D polymorphism of the 16th intron in ACE gene. The pilots with I allele showed good physical performance.
