Equivalent Effect' is one of the most prevailing concepts of contemporary theory of translation. The paper traces the development of this concept and affirms its contribution to the theory of translation. After considering its confusion in terms of defining the readership, however, the author discusses the limitation as a guiding principle for translating evaluation. It is concluded that the proper solution to the dilemma may lie in the pursuit of the maximun equivalence in effect.
