上海自元初立县后 2 62年间未筑城墙 ,然明对倭患严重威胁民众生命财产安全 ,阻碍城市发展。顾从礼疏清并出资筑城 ,得到广大民众支持。城墙使倭患得以平息 ,为城厢的政治、经济、文化发展作出一定贡献。

Shanghai hadnt built its city wall for 262 years since it was established a country. Till Ming dynasty, the suffering from Japana threatened the peoples life and property seriously, also hindered the developing of the city. Gu CongLi expounded his views about building the city wall to the emperor and subsidized the construction. This obtained public support. The suffering subsided because of the city wall. Then the city wall accelerated the developing of Shanghai old citys politics, economy and culture.
