A Meticulous Study of"定"as an Adverb in the Chinese Language in the Middle Ancient Times

中古汉语副词“定”的用法比较复杂 ,既可以表示肯定语气 ,也可以表示疑问语气 ,还可以表示转折语气 ,各种用法的发展比较平衡。但由于其所负载的义项过多 ,而且组合功能不强 。

In the Chinese language in the middle ancient times,the usage of the character'定'(ding,meaning definitely)as an adverb was comparatively complicated.It could be used to denote the affirmative mood,or the interrogative mood,or even the transitional mood.In general,those various uses developed in a relatively even way,but because of its being loaded with too many senses,and of its not so strong a function of combining with other characters,it was of very low frequence in use throughout the middle ancient times.
