The toughening mechanism of Mo La 2O 3 sintered bars has been investigated systematically by SEM, EDAX, X ray diffraction and AES. It was shown that the transverse rupture strength and ductility of the sintered Mo bars were improved greatly by the addition of La 2O 3. The toughening mechanism of Mo La 2O 3 is segregation of impurities to the surface of La 2O 3 particles.
