The Isa vessel at the Phelps Dodge Miami Smelter is the primary smelting unit that supplies the mix of Cu containing matte and slag to the electric settling furnace. The Isa technology comprises blowing a certain amount of blast air and oxygen through the lance into the molten bath consisting of concentrate, fluxes and reverts. The physical and chemical conditions inside the vessel, and overall smelting efficiency are greatly dependent on lance performance. Recent studies at the smelter have shown an increase in lance availability with the subsequent positive effect on the Isa vessel throughput. This paper presents analysis on lance failure and provided our general understanding of the factors influencing the Isa vessel performance.
