Lin Zexu and Suppressing Salt Smuggling

林则徐作为封建社会的一名能员清官,他着力发展生产,关心民间利病。在整顿河工、兴修水利、改革财政和查禁鸦片等方面,无不宿弊一清,做出了显著成绩。他整顿湖广盐务,认为官运商盐,减价售卖以敌邻私,并无成效,遂采取专严缉私的办法,成效显著,一时私枭敛(?),官盐销数大增。

Lin Zexu was as a honest and upright offcial in feudal society and he tried to develop production. Whenhe strengthened the salt administration in Hu Guang, he regarded that official's transportation of salt andselling salt in low price were not any effect. Later, he strictly suppressed smuggling. He got good effect. Thequantity of salt sel1ing was greatly increased.
