报纸版面是报纸内容的呈现形式 ,首先要符合新闻传播规律 ,方便读者阅读新闻 ;其次受制于当时社会的排版、印刷技术 ;再次它与彼时的社会政治经济状况息息相关。美国报纸版面随着印刷技术的成熟和新闻业自身的演变 ,经历了不同的阶段。前工业化时期 ,报纸版面虽然具备了现代报纸的某些要素 ,但与图书形式没有拉开距离。传统时期 ,报纸版面经历了垂直式版面兴起以及向水平式版面过渡 ;现代时期 ,版面设计在报纸工作中的地位上升 。

The layout of newspaper is a form to manifest certain content. It should be agreeable with the rules for mass communication, and convenient to reading. It is also dependent on the typesetting and printing technology in that time. Undoubtedly the social, political and economic situation at that time is closely related with the newspaper layout. The layout of American newspapers has seen different periods along with a matured printing technology and the change of the journalism itself. During the pre-industrial periods, newspapers did not seem to differ radically from the book style even though this kind of newspaper possessed some factors of modern newspapers. In the traditional time, the layout of newspaper finished a process of changing from a vertical pattern to the horizontal one. However, in modern time, layout designing has been highlighted in the whole procedure of newspaper production. As a result, the mould layout for newspaper form becomes a mainstream.
