The research of second language acquisition should be characterized as a cross disciplinary study. The paper makes a general review of the vocabulary acquisition research abroad from the perspective of second language acquisition. Much discussion here is devoted to the study of English vocabulary acquisition in that it has borne noticeable fruits of research. This paper only centers on theories, methods and achievements of the relevant research in 1980's and 1990's. Concerning the research before 1980, only a breif introduction is available.
