On the Limitations of Political Functions of Morality and the Methods of Avoidance

道德的政治功能之局限是:道德政治化可能使道德异化为暴力强制,而道德理想主义则可能造成"道德恐怖".克服之道应是:以法律为中介界定二者的关系,把道德和政治适当分开,对道德系统适当分层,建立道德与政治的良性互动机制,使二者各得其所而各擅其长.为完整准确贯彻"法德合治"的方略,宜以"法治为基础,德治为指导".

Politicized morality could result in morality's being dissimilated into violent coercion and moral idealism could cause 'moral terror'. To avoid these limitations, the interrelationships between morality and politics should be properly defined and strictly differentiated,and the moral system should be appropriately graded by means of law in order that a benign interaction mechanism between morality and politics may be established. With each in its proper place and each playing its respective role, the policy of governing with law as the basis and with morality as the guidance could be pursued and the purpose of the implementation of 'the co-reign with both law and morality' could be achieved.
