The Stifled Space: Analysis of the Attempt to Create the Speech Space in the 1920s in China Through the Case of Chen Xiying

在20世纪20年代的中国,一批从海外留学归来的年轻学者对当时国内混乱的言论界感到了巨大的不满,为此他们通过各种努力来创建言论的公共空间,介绍有关新思想、新观点,以期引导社会,规范批评秩序,但他们的努力却失败了。本文主要是通过陈西滢这个个案,考察了围绕在《现代评论》周围的自由主义知识分子开创批评空间的努力,剖析他们这种努力之所以失败的社会历史原因。

In the 1920s, a large number of young Chinese scholars who had studied abroad and returned to China felt immensely dissatisfied with the confused domestic speech circle at that time. Therefore, they made great efforts to establish the public speech space where they wanted to introduce new thoughts and viewpoints through hard work so as to guide the society and standardize the criticism order, but they failed in their efforts. This paper mainly investigates the exertion of the liberal intellectuals who were contributing to the magazine Modern Review and trying to create a criticism space as well as analyzes the social and historical reasons of their failure through the case of Chen Xivine.
