In the first part of the article, an idealized computer aided development process for the entire powertrain of a vehicle is presented. It is shown how state of the art simulation techniques can contribute to a continuous development process, which is based upon offline simulation using hardware in the loop, the utilization of the possibilities to link electronic transmission and engine control units.\;Then there will be a report of the application and development of real time simulation models, such as engine models and transmission models, which are essential modules for the development process mentioned above.\;Based upon the described development methodology, applications that have already been implemented and further possible applications of this holistic development process are covered.
