The paper is to analyze and interpret in detail the content and aesthetic features of each 'grade' in Sikong Tu's TwentyFour Grades of Poetry. The discussion will be placed in the wider perspective, that is, one needs to put Sikong Tu's critique of poetry in the context of ancient Chinese philosophical thoughts and aesthetic tradition. His critique undoubtedly becomes a source of inspiration for some of Tang poets. With careful study of artistic conception and distinctiveness of flavor and style as demonstrated in some of Tang poems, one might understand and appreciate more deeply the significance and function of 'TwentyFour Grades of Poetry.'
