The FAENA method is applied to compute the fractal dimension of profile of the spherical and cutting wear debris. The 500 samples of the spherical and cutting wear particles were collected by each of the following three ways: the test, the field collection, and the photo of wear particles. They were used to compute the fractal dimension of the profile. By analysis of the data, it is showed that the two kinds of wear particles are statistically fractal under 500 and 800 enlargement factor. The fractal dimension of the profile has a normal distribution. In other words, the fractal dimension of the spherical wear particles is D(μ D,σ 2)~D(1.025,0.3689× -4 ), that of the cutting wear particles is D( μ D,σ 2)~D(1.102,3.579× -4 ). The result of the distribution of the fractal dimension of the profile about the two kinds of typical wear particles is important to the automatic recognition of the wear particles in theory and practical fields.
