Folkways, as a time-honored blueprint of behavior in our culture, indefinitely has an unconscious yet strong and lasting influence on the ways of living, thinking and acting in human society. The article attempts to explain the folkways restrictions on rules of communication from both theoretical and practical aspects. It focus its discussion on the differences in some speech acts among Chinese, American and Japanese folkways that are most likely to cause misunderstanding or even cultural conflicts. Consequently, it's of great importance to study and compare various folkways so as to improve the process of cross-cultural communication.
