That Taiping Heavenly Kingdom made Jinling (Nanjing) the capital caused the breaking of the political order in the south of Yangzi river, the scholar class' losing of their former economic and social position to certain extend, the breakup of the traditional imperial examination system and less chance of promotion in official career, and therefore, the scholar class in this area soon split up.
