Whitman's poetry indicates that death is not the end of life but a preparing part of life; death and life seem contradictory and antagonistic to each other; yet, depending upon and interacting with each other, they attain a harmonious unity. The poet's view on death is distinctive of his cosmic consciousness as reflected in Leaves of Grass.
