D.H. Lawrence's greatness lies in his unique opinion on society expressed by his depiction of human sexual life. By analyzing the life of the three female characters in Rainbow, this paper shows the development of the female self consciousness in modern society and Lawrence's exploration on human life. In addition, based on Jacobson's linguistic theory of duality, it illustrates the perfect combination of realism and modernism of the works.
