By using the circular footing with distributed unifonn loading and based on the Shengweinan's theory of elastodynamics,the condition of Mindlin's formula to take the place of Boussinesq's formula was found.The paper also pointed out why the deep foundation's settlement in theory was larger than the observation when using the Bossinesq's stress distribution to calculate the settlement.
