The Rise and Fall of Chinese in Singapore: Language-based Ecological Balance Considerations

新加坡作为在全球化进程下多语言环境极具代表性的国家,在兼顾族群和睦和国家意识的权衡中,语言文化环境凸显出庞杂繁复与敏感。以新加坡华语升沉嬗变为基点,以语言生态学为崭新视角,对新加坡多元种族、多元文化、多元语言的背景下语言生态环境的失衡进行观照和思辨,洞彻语言使用者的心理诉求和情感依附对语言选择的影响,提出任何语言的一枝独秀都不利于语言生态环境的平衡与健全,任何语言的衰退和泯灭也都会殃及其他语言的共存和发展,以期探寻多语言成长在整体性、多样性和可持续性等方面具有的客观价值。

In Singapore- one of the most representative countries in the globalization process, language and cultural environment highlights the complication and sensitivity of its multi-lingual environment when taking into account the ethnic harmony and national awareness. Based on the rise and fall of the Chinese language in Singapore, the author studies the language ecological environment under the context of many ethnic groups, cultures and languages from the perspective of language ecology, perceiving the infl uence of language users＇ psychological appeals and emotional attachments on language choices. It concludes that different language are mutually dependent and coexist.
