摘要
萨默赛特·毛姆以描写异彩纷呈的异域小说而著名,而帝国主题是其中绕不开的话题。本文从毛姆的三部作品《探险者》、《麦金托什》和《哨所》中的帝国意象入手,见证英帝国由盛转衰的历史变迁,揭示导致英帝国由征服走向和解与妥协的演变过程的历史和社会根源,以此窥见作者隐匿在文化缅怀背后深刻的人文关怀和反殖民主义的情结。
Somerset Maugham is noted for his marvelous alien novels, among which the imperial themes frequent occur. This paper, by taking The Explorer, Mackintosh and The Outstation authored by Maugham as examples, aims to witness the historical changes of British Empire from rise to fall, reveals its historical and social reasons leading to the shift in imperial polices from conquest to conciliation and ultimately to capitulation and exhibits the writerrs humanistic and anti-colonialistic concern behind the cultural deploring.
