本文粗略考察了同为英美现代主义代表诗人的威廉斯与庞德、艾略特的诗学思想和实践的异同,认为庞德和艾略特奉欧洲传统为圭臬,以融入其中为旨趣,是向后看的、保守的;威廉斯则立足美国本土,力求创造适合美国习语的诗歌形式,是向前看的、创新的。无论在创作题材和表现方法上,他们都有本质的不同。

This paper investigates into the similarities and differences between the poetics of William Carlos Williams,Ezra Pound and T.S.Eliot,arguing that Pound and Eliot,aiming to become part of European literary tradition,are looking backward and conformists,while Williams,sticking to locality and attempting to invent new measures for American idiom,is looking forward and innovative.They are essentially different in both their choices of subject matter and means of expression.
