美籍华裔女作家任碧莲创作的小说《典型的美国佬》,描写了3个中国移民者在美国纽约的生活经历。他们怀揣着梦想来到美国,并且不断被这里的主流文化所影响。因此,他们从最开始的美国文化价值观念的批判者变成了接受者,成为了他们最初蔑视的那种群体——"典型的美国佬"。任碧莲借助自身的跨文化身份及小说中角色身份的认同与建构,指出文化身份并不是一成不变的,进而为当前全球文化融合背景下种族所面临的身份建构与文化困惑问题,提供了全新的研究视野。

Typical American by Chinese-American woman writer Gish Jen describes the life experiences of three Chinese immigrants living in New York. They came to America with dreams and continually influenced by American dominant culture. Therefore, they changed from the original criticizers to accepters to American culture values, became ＂typical Americans＂ that they looked down upon initially. With her cross-cultural identity as well as the identity and construction of roles in the novel, Gish Jen points out that the culture identity is not invariable, which provides a new research vision for the problems of identity construction and culture confusion that races face under the background of the global cultural integration.
