Power and Status:Research on the Interpersonal Meaning of Mood in the Language of Jane Eyre

系统功能语言学三大纯理功能之一的人际功能由语旨制约和决定,能够表达说话者的身份、地位、动机和态度等。在词汇语法层面,主要通过语气系统体现。文章从系统功能语言学角度出发,以整本小说为文本,在人际意义的框架下,对小说语气系统进行定量和定性分析,试图从小说语言形式及特征所折射的男女主人公权力距离和地位关系进行阐释,进而揭示《简·爱》中人物语言语气的人际意义。

The Interpersonal Function, one of the three meta-functions in SFL, is determined by tenor. It expresses speakers＇ identity, status, motivation and attitude. On the lexical grammar level, the Interpersonal Function is reflected by mood system. This article, from the perspective of SFL, chooses the whole novel as corpus to conduct the quantitative and qualitative analysis, thus the power distance and status of the heroes and heroine can be interpreted. In the end, the article will reveal the interpersonal meaning of characters in Jane Eyre.
