Objective To observe the clinical efficacy and safety of tulobuterol patches in treatment of nighttime cough in children with acute respiratory tract infection. Methods One hundred and thirteen children with acute respiratory tract infection and nighttime cough were randomly divided into observation (n = 57 ) and control groups (n = 56). Besides comprehensive treatment, tulobuterol patches were supplemented in the observation group and procaterol hydrochloride tablet in the control group. The course of treatment was 5 days. Symptom scores of nighttime cough, nocturnal sleep, total effective rate and adverse reactions were statistically compared between two groups. Results After 5 day-therapy, symptom scores of nighttime cough and nocturnal sleep in the observation group were significantly lower than those in the control group (0. 78 ± 0. 41 vs. 1.09 ± 0. 39 ; 0. 72 ± 0.49 vs. 1.05 ± 0. 40, P 〈 0.05). Total effective rate was 82% in the observation group, significantly higher compared with 64% in the control group (P 〈 0.05 ). In the observation group, localized skin redness and itching occurred in two patients (4%). In the control group, adverse reactions including hand tremors and heart palpitations were observed in 6 patients ( 11% ). Conclusions Tulobuterol patches exert a high efficacy in treatment of nighttime cough in children with acute respiratory tract infection, which significantly alleviates the symptoms, improves sleep quality and yields few adverse reactions.
