Logic of the Academic Freedom Thought of John Dewey

John Dewey was an indispensable figure in the development of American Academic Freedom. He played a crucial role in founding the American Association of University Professors （AAUP） and proposed the Principles on Academic Freedom and Academic Tenure. This paper analyzes Dewey＇s thoughts on academic freedom and its logic mainly from the aspect of his philosophy. Scientific standards of social sciences, the unity of academic freedom and academic responsibility and academic tenure are the core ideas of Dewey＇ s academic thoughts. Dewey＇ s principles of academic freedom are founded on his philosophy of empirical naturalism and humanism which emphasizes rationality, science and democratic society.
