On the Research of the Traditional Proagmatic Reason and the Modernization of Chinese Culture——Take the example of Hunan Literati and Hunan Culture

儒家士大夫有一个追求经世致用的思想传统,形成了一种以实用理性为价值取向的思想品格。湖湘士大夫作为推动中国近代化的主体,就是从经世致用的实用理性出发,倡导学习与引进西方的科技文化、制度文化、观念文化,从而推动了洋务运动、戊戌维新、辛亥革命及新文化运动的近代化运动。

Confucian scholars who pursue an ideological tradition of ＂taking an active interest in government and application to socie- ty＂, which formed a kind of thinking character on value orientation of pragmatic reason. Hunan literati, as the main body of driving China＇ s modernization, starting from the practical rationality of ethos connoted, which advocated learning and introducing western cul- ture of science and technology, institutional culture and concept culture. Therefore, it promoted the modernization of China in the Westernization Movement, Reform Movement of 1898, the Revolution of 1911 and the New Culture Movement.
