Yu Yan's thought on the Changes includes two aspects of discussions on the theory of Yi learning itself and transplantingprinciples of Changes to Alchemical Daoism. In the former aspect, basing himself on the idea “the hexagram and line statements musthave been derived from the hexagram pictures and principles cannot go beyond images” and selecting reasonable image-oriented theo-ries from the Han (206 BCE-220 CE) to the Song (960-1279) dynasties, he elaborated on the images used in the basic text of andthe “Commentaries” on the Changes and discussed the number of Heaven and Earth as well as that of the Great Expansion, in thecourse of which he raised his idea that the number of Taiji [lit., Supreme Ultimate] is the inherent basis for the formation of the num-ber of the Great Expansion. For the latter aspect is concerned, he took Yi learning to serve internal alchemy refinery by adopting theDao (Way) of Taiji[Supreme Ultimate] and thus discovered a pre-heaven theoretic basis for internal alchemy refinery. In addition, hedrew upon the images, numbers, and diagrams of the Changes so as to explicate internal alchemy refinery and reveal compatibility be-tween Yi learning and Alchemical Daoism. His thought on the Changes not only contributed to Changes studies but also enriched theo-ries of Alchemical Daoism.
