Objective To investigate whether patients with acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (AECOPD) requiring low flow oxygen would benefit from humidified oxygen when compared to dry oxygen therapy. Methods Two hundred pa- tients with AECOPD requiring nasal oxygen at low-flow rates were divided into a control group of 106 and an observation group of 94. The control group received humidified oxygen delivered by bubble-jet humidifiers, while the observation group received dry oxy- gen gas which was supplied through nasal cannula directly attached to the flow meter. Subjective complaints (nasal discomfort, throat discomfort, headache, and chest discomfort) and symptom severity on day 3 and day 5 were compared between the two groups. Results There were no statistical differences in discomfort symptoms on day 3 and day 5 between the two groups(P〉0.05 for all). Conclusion Oxygen administered without prior humidification may not contribute to discomfort of patients with AECOPD.
