Review the Explanation of Polysystem Theory on the Literary Translation——The Translation of Sherlock Holmes in Late of Qing Dynasty

多元系统理论是翻译研究学派的一个重要分支,它给翻译研究开辟了一条描述性的、面向译语系统的、功能主义的、系统的、动态的新途径。多元系统理论有一定的解释力,但并不具有普遍适用性,不足以解释中国近代翻译文学这一特例;这一理论的局限性源于它只考虑了制约翻译策略选择的客观文化因素,而忽视了作为翻译主体的人的主观能动性和译入语读者接受的作用。

As an important branch of translation study theory. Polysystem theory cuts a new systemicand dynamic approach to translation study with its characteristic of description, focusing on the system oftarget language and functionalism. It offers to some extent the theoretic evidence to some sides of transla-ting. But it is not adequate in explaining the specific case of literary translation in modern China and thusnot universally applicable. The limitation of the theory results from the fact that it does not take into con-sideration the initiative of the translators except its emphasis on the influence of objective culture with re-gard to the selection of translation strategy.
