British contemporary writer Graham Swift's newly published novel Wish You Were Here is a work explicitly concerned with space. This is firstly exemplified in the narrative form wherein space manipulates the narrative order and disparate elements are juxtaposed side by side in a spatial design. In this way, the trajectory of linear narrative is dislocated. Besides, space in the novel is not just as an external, physical space but also lived space that embodies the internal and mental state of characters. Swifl's concern with space has something to do with the larger historical context. By connecting the local and the individual with the wider global issues, Swift lays bare the violence of capitalist production of space, and the adrift and lonely life lived by the marginalized.
