Cross- cultural Study on the Dimensions and Characteristics of Kenneth Scott Latourette's Chinese Studies and the Comparison Analysis with John K. Fairbank'Studies

耶鲁大学赖德烈教授是二十世纪30、40年代美国中国学研究的领导者,被誉为"盲人国中的独眼人"。本文对赖德烈中国学的源起、动力和学术维度进行了分析,并从关注角度、学术方法和价值取向三个角度,对赖德烈中国学与哈佛大学的费正清学派中国学进行了比较,指出了赖德烈中国学的研究特点及其学术地位。

Kenneth Scott Latourette was the leading American Sinologist in 1930 s and 1940 s and played a very important part in the development of American Chinese studies. This essay is to examine Latourette'original motivation and persistence for his Chinese studies and to analyze the dimensions and characteristics of his study on the basis of text- reading and cross- cultural analysis. His Chinese studies are also compared with those of John King Fairbank from the perspective of academic focus,research method and value orientation to illustrate Latourette's academic position and characteristics in American Chinese studies.
