The exports of Chinese furniture have risen rapidly since China joined the WTO in 2001. The country's export value of furniture rose from USD5.4 billion in 2002 to USD48.8 billion in 2012, at a compound annual growth rate of 25%. Now China is theworld's greatest producer and consumer of the furniture. After nearly ten years of fast rush, the Chinese furniture industry stepped into a period of readjustment. Its growth rate declined sharply in 2013 to only 6%. The country sold USD24 billion of furniture in overseas markets in the first half of 2014, a year-on-yeardrop of 6%.The country's furniture exports are restrained by some factors. For example, the high-end raw materials of the Chinese furniture have been heavily relied on the foreign suppliers. And the Vietnamese furniture manufacturers have been grabbing shares in the global market since 2006. To change the situation, the Chinese furniture makers would need to pay more attention to their design and brand promotion, and to take more efforts to develop the potentials of its vast domestic market.
